“Do you really think so?”

“Don’t take it as a compliment.”

“Too late.”

Suddenly, they were both laughing alone in the middle of a courtyard, under the dark veil of the watchful night.

“I will try… to do better,” Erich promised, offering a hand to Flynn, who simply stared at it in hesitance, his fingers as rosy as his cheeks out in the cold.

“It is a poor promise...”

“It is a promise coming from the bottom of my heart.”

“Are you sure your heart is not too weak to handle it?”

The words scratched Erich’s throat.

“You can help me find out, Egerton.”

That was the only apology he got, with a firm handshake and shining eyes that would soon become lost to one another in a blink.

From the window, Jasper watched them with a smile.

“Do you think it will work?” he asks, turning to me.

“It will depend solely on them.”

The clerk raises his eyebrows sceptically, forcing me to ask, “You don’t believe in that?”

“I find it very hard to.”

“You should have a little more faith,” I mock, only for him to roll his eyes. “You could be surprised.”

“The thing is that Erich does not believe in love anymore. Not as he did before. And Egerton? Heavens… so broken and so good, but I fear he wouldn’t know how to choose. I fear his heart wouldn’t be strong enough.”

I fight back the urge to cross my arms.

“And between what would he have to choose?”

“Make his father proud and be unhappy, or be who he was born to be, and love whoever captures his heart.”
